On the expanding community I have two successes to report. I called the Zack, Lee highway superintendent and joked how the perfect time for skiing corresponds with the time he needs cars out of the way to plow. I must have connected as his team plowed out the parking for us at Beartown. He also informed me that careful parking along the road in Lee is permitted. With fresh powder on January 6 we skied the first in a generation traverse of the Wildcat trail from the parking at gate 4 to the top of the run above the Burgoyne Pass. I rate it an intermediate slope with lots of ups and downs. Suitable for BC x-c or tele skis but still enjoyable on AT set ups.
We then skied Burgoyne pass up to Laura’s tower along the ridge trail and down Polar and the first in a generation run down Sedgwick. Thanks to all of you who came to the work days on these area last fall. Where were you? You’ve earned your turns cutting these trails now come claim some powder! Many of us come from the lift serve world looking for fresh powder, challenging slopes minus the crowds, expense and glitz of the resorts.
Others, like myself who come from x-c and then tele world will find these new areas in Beartown and the western intermediate slopes in Berkshire Snow Basin enjoyable.
